Upper Boat
1986 Mercruiser 140 inboard/outboard making a ticking noise in upper unit.?
Just bought it and the seller said a mechanic told him it's probably just a lifter tapping and it just needs to be tightened. Anyone know how hard this is to do and if using the boat prior to getting it fixed will ruin the motor?
First, it is very hard to isolate where noise is coming from in an I/O. This noise could be a stuck lifter, it could also be a rod bearing, drive yoke, upper gears, etc. Have it checked out by a tech.
