Vacation Trips Around Calgary and the Rocky Mountains Part 2
This is part two of a two part series on things to do in Southern Alberta. If you’ve never been to Alberta, Calgary, or the Rocky Mountains, then you’re missing out. Part one talked about the major attractions associated with the Rocky Mountains and the major rivers and lakes. Here are more things to visit and do closer to the city centre.
Calgary is blessed with numerous recreational parks and green spaces that are perfect for hiking and backpacking. Day trips to the mountains are a great idea for a nice weekend of camping and enjoying the great outdoors. The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is located in Calgary’s inner city, and boasts 36-hectares of land. The Sanctuary offers over 1 kilometre of hiking trails and an abundance of wildlife to observe and photograph. A trip here is sure to be educational and fun.
If you’re stopping in the city, then try to visit during the busy Stampede season where the city turns into a premier destination for international music acts, the world’s largest outdoor show, athletic performances in rodeo, and more! The Stampede usually takes place after the first Sunday in July.
Golfers can engage in games across the city in the many courses Calgary offers. The public and private courses are diverse and well maintained, and are located near all of the amenities of the city. Again, a trip out to Banff, Kananaskis, Canmore, or Lake Louise is a short drive to some of the most beautiful golf courses in the country. While you’re in the Rockies for a golf-getaway, be sure to dive into the hot springs welling up in Radium and Banff for some much needed relaxation. It might even improve your game!
When you have had your fill of hiking, camping, trail rides, golfing, water and winter sports, why not try something a little out of the ordinary? Dog sledding tours are available just outside of the city! Touring and dog sled racing will certainly be an unforgettable winter adventure. Imagine racing through the trees on a comfortable and exhilarating ride.
With all of the attractions of the city and the beautiful mountains nearby, a new adventure in the outdoors is awaiting your arrival! There's lots to do and see in Calgary and surrounding area (but remember the mountains are a couple of hours drive away).
