i'm a little confused on a call in a previous Pirates game against the Rockies?
the way this call started was on a strike the batter for the pirates swung clear through and was bringing the bat back around the catcher threw the ball to first and caught a piece of the bat. the runner at first was safe but the throw was wild because of the catcher hitting his arm off the bat so the runner ran to second saw that he could go to third and got there safely. at some point they made him go back to first and the announcers weren't sure why it is and the one even said that it was interference and the other announcer said if there was any interference the batter would've been called out but he wasn't he finished his at bat. so i'm wondering if any one can explain it to me i don't get it at all the runner should've remained at third
First of all, I can't believe that someone who claims to be an umpire would say the runner would have to go back if the umpire called a "foul tip". A foul tip is, by definition, a ball that goes from the bat directly into the catcher's mitt and is caught by the catcher. This is a live ball and runners may advance.However, to answer your question, if the batter swings so hard he carries the bat all the way through and, in the umpire's judgment, unintentionally hits the catcher or the ball behind him with his back swing before the catcher has securely held the ball, it shall be called a strike only (not interference). The ball will be dead, however, and no runner may advance on the play.
