What do I do when there is a tornado?... more info...?
Ok I live in Edmonton and my friend lives in an apartment building, I would usually go over to hang out there since we are really close friends and sometimes sleep over, it is a 3 story apartment and he is on the secoond floor. what would I do if a tornado were to happen? See I'm horrified of tornadoes, there my biggest fear and I really would love to know what to do.
Ideally, you should get to the lowest, innermost part of the building, away from any doors/windows. If it is a big enough apt. building, it probably has a laundry room or a utility/boiler/furnace room on the first floor, try to get in there. (assuming that it doesn't have exterior walls/windows). If you can't do that you need to get to the most central part of his apartment. What you are trying to do is put as much of the building between you and the outside, so any door that you can shut, or closet that you can squeeze into (and shut the door) will provide you with the best chance of surviving (yes, you may be harmed, but you will survive).
Now, God forbid, if a tornado happens while you are asleep and you can't even get out of the room, try to get under the bed or on the floor, and pull the mattress over you. The greatest danger in a tornado is all of the flying debris. Just imagine every thing in your bedroom (that is not bolted down) getting whipped up and hurled in your direction, now add in every piece of debris that is already in the tornado, hurtling straight towards you, you need something to protect you, even flip over a couch if you can.
