Replacing Wrigley: Sac-Religous or Worth Considering?
I am a die hard Cubs fan and I just read an article at http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/chi-17-cubs-brite-chicagosep17,0,1561611.story about how the Cubs players loved the home club house at Miller Park and would like something like that,
I am torn, Wrigley is to the Cubs what Fenway is to the Red Sox and a modern replica of either wouldn't be the same, but also the Cubs might have a better time attracting free agents and isn't wrigley starting to fall apart?
Your thoughts?
Since it is on the historic register, maybe what they could do is gut it and re build it and maybe expand it a little bit, by making an offer the apartment owners can't refuse (not in the Al Capone sense of the phrase..).
I agree strongly on this. I heard that pieces of the ceiling above the lower deck were falling on the seats. That is definitely a sign that it needs to be replaced. I say that in maybe the next 10 years, they should tear down the entire grandstand at the end of the season, move the Cubs into US Cellular Field for at least 2 years, and build a new 2 deck stadium with better concession stands, open concourses, and more bathrooms. This may mean tearing down a couple houses and apartments around that area to make room for the wider concourses but I think it will all be worth it in the end. I also heard they're planning to build a parking garage right next to Wrigley. The Yankees are replacing Yankee Stadium with a new one because although it's the greatest venue in all of sports, it has its flaws. There was a beam that fell from the upper deck 10 years ago, forcing the Yankees to play 3 games at Shea Stadium. I also heard that George Steinbrenner has been pushing for a new stadium for years. I will be sad when it goes but excited to visit the new one.
