What are good places to stay at in the center of London (hotels or hostels(?

Most hotels & hostels reside in the Bloomsbury and Bayswater districts of Central London. There are also quite a lot in Earl's Court but this is a mainly residential area and not so good to stay in.

As for hostels i would highly recommend The Generator in Bloomsbury http://www.hotel-assist.com/generator-hostel-london.html but with rooms for a minimum of 4 there is not much privacy. If you want to spend a little bit more and have a room to yourself with private bathroom, check out the 3 star Blakemore Hotel in Bayswater http://www.hotel-assist.com/blakemore-hotel-london.html which is extremely cheap for a hotel of this standard.
